Welcome everyone to the OWH Pizzazz Blog Skip! This is the first stop after leaving OWH Stars and Stamps. I really had fun putting together some samples for today.
I focused on paper piercing (with a dab of dry embossing tossed in). Paper piercing is simply putting holes in paper to add a decorative or design element. I use the Tim Holtz retractable paper piercer. You do not need a specialized tool for this pizzazz element. You can use a regular sewing needle and pick the size that fits your project!
There are also plastic templates that can be used for specific patterns.
This card was mad using Stampin' Up templates that are made to go with punches and dies. The small sentiment has an oval shaped pierced around it. I used this instead of inking the edges of the oval to make it stand out. The scallops along the bottom and the edge of the Thanks sentiment are cut with Stampin' Up dies and pierced using a SU template as well.
On this card, I used a simple circle to frame the softly stamped flower. I also used dry embossing on the background for added interest.
If you don't have templates, you can use a simple ruler for straight lines or small round items for circles!
In this card, I used a ruler to make corner holes instead of using a corner rounder for interest. (I'm sorry that the photo doesn't show the pattern on the darker cardstock very well.)
I am not a very brave soul, but I am sure that some of you out there could come up with some pretty awesome free-hand patterns for your cards!
Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy the skip by heading to Velda's blog for the next round of fun!

Sheila, I love the tip you give on using a ruler or a shape to pierce. I will give that a try for sure!
ReplyDeleteNice work Sheila. I really like the tone-on- tone stamping you did in th second card... It has never once occurred to me to try that. Piercing and the embossing folders are among my favorite ways to add a little something extra to cards.
ReplyDeleteNice cards, Sheila. I have always been a freehand piercer, but using a ruler is a great idea! I like the color palette in your last card, very striking.
ReplyDeleteI love dry embossing! and heat embossing, too! But you've given me a new idea: the piercing you did around the portion of the flower...kind of "spotlights" that---I'm eager to try something out like that!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried paper piercing yet, and I really like the piercing around the flower. I am looking forward to giving it a try! http://visionsofpaper.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI think the piercing on the scallops adds the pizzazz.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sheila for sharing. I like the different ways you pierced your cards. I never think to do that to my cards. It does add a little something to the cards.
ReplyDeleteYour cards are great and most of the things you showed I already do, but I will admit I have not tried paper piercing. That might be something I can do to give my cards a more pizzazz look. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip using stuff around the house for templates. I've tried piercing before and it didn't turn out well... probably because I was doing it freehand! Your cards are great. I really like the second one and how you spotlit the flower. TFS!
ReplyDeleteWOW, I've done piercing but never around an element like you did with the second card around the flower. That really made it stand out. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI tend to neglect piercing as an option to step up my cards - thanks for reminding me how this simple {and no cost} step can add pizzazz!
ReplyDeleteGreat cards! I especially like the circle around the flower, great idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat cards! I really like the effect around the flower.

Oooh, I like the idea of using a circle around a flower like card number one. That's and excellent way to spotlight an image without added a lot of bulk. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI think the circle around the flower and the pierced scallops...very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI really like the piercing. I'll have to try it again. I've heard that you can use plastic canvas to space the holes. Wonder if I have any of that around the house.
ReplyDeleteGreat examples of paper piercing. I forget to do this and it has such a nice effect.
ReplyDeleteI really love the combination of colored paper in the last card. The dark purple, white and green really make the patterned paper pop! Great job!
ReplyDeleteHi Sheila,
ReplyDeleteThanks for some great tips. I really liked the layering you did with the scalloped, pierced edges in the first card.
Wow I did not realize how much those little holes change the look. Much more fancy. Thanks

The piercing fits in so well with that shape.
I like the circle around the flower in the second card because it is unique and highlights the flower.
I am fan of embossing too!
I think the flower paper in the third card really adds Pizzazz!

ReplyDeleteI really like your color combinations and the piercing on the scallops. Thanks for the ideas.
I really was pazzazzed by your first card - love the scallops. I may have to scraplift that idea. The others were great too. I'll have to try some paper piercing!
ReplyDeleteI like the scallops and must scrap some of this too.

I like your shaped buttons and your scallops are so cute. What a great addition to your card. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI like your first card with the pierced scallops that are layered. So much texture really makes a card look 'rich'.
ReplyDeleteI always find it difficult to get my piercing to look good - you have given me some tips. The piercing around the single flower "makes" the card - what a great idea!

ReplyDeleteYour piercing is wonderful. I never take the time to do it but it sure adds a lot. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteAll cards with Pizazz. The circle highlighting the flower is brilliant. Like some of the others, I have tried piercing and it didn't look well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great ideas and tips. Great cards too.
ReplyDeleteLike the way you pierced around the flower, great way to emphasize part of a stamped image. Thanks for all the tips you offered.
ReplyDeleteGreat groups of cards...really love the pierced circle arounf the stamp...really great idea! TFS!!!
ReplyDeleteI forget about piercing and I even have that Stampin Up template. Thanks for showing how nice this looks.
ReplyDeleteI love the way the flower looks with the piercing around it!
ReplyDeleteThose scallops on the first card, along with all the paper piercing on each card are incredible. You did a great job. I definitely need a template to get mine even, but may try to just do some random ones.
ReplyDeleteThe paper piercing adds a nice border to your cards. Another great tool to use is Tim's ruler which has evenly spaced wholes to do piercing.
ReplyDeleteGreat cards! I just love how you pierced a circle around the flower to make it stand out!
ReplyDeleteLove your cards! That circle pierced around the flower stamp is a really nice touch! Thanks for sharing your great ideas!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous card-- I adore the first one and the piercing looks great! The scallops look great!

Your cards are beautiful! I think the piercing is very eye catching and adds a whole new dimension! I also have the Tim Holtz retractable paper piercer and I love it!
ReplyDeleteYour paper piercing really does add pizzazz to your cards. Tim Holtz also has a ruler with piercing holes along one edge that can be used to keep piercing even. I especially love the piercing you used with the scallop edge and the little flower buttons really compliment your over all design.
ReplyDeleteLove the look of paper piercing! I have done it freehand before by drawing very lightly with a pencil and following my line, then erasing the pencil.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing different ways to add paper piercing to cards. All of them added pizzazz. Good idea about using everyday things for shape templates. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the new tips on paper piercing. I really like the pierced circle around the flower. What a great way to highlight a specific part of the card. I'll be trying this for sure!
ReplyDeleteI like your varied ideas for piercing and the way you use colors and design! TFS!
